SIA Update: Mandatory Refresher Training for Security Guard Licence Renewal

The SIA Security Guard Refresher Training + First Aid Canary Wharf is available for all licenced Security Guard who need to renew their licence. Starting 1 April 2025, security guards holding an SIA licence must complete a refresher qualification before renewing their licence. This ensures security professionals stay updated with essential skills and industry knowledge.

Who Needs to Complete the Refresher Training?

✅ From 1 April 2025 – All security guards applying for licence renewal must complete a refresher qualification.
✅ Until 31 March 2025 – Security guards with qualifications obtained before April 2021 must complete either Top-Up Training or Refresher Training before renewal.

🚨 Important: Before enrolling in refresher training, you must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate or an equivalent qualification. Both Emergency First Aid and Security Guard Refresher training must be
completed to renew your licence.

Refresher Course: Key Topics Covered
Unit 1: Security Officer Responsibilities in the Private Security Sector (Refresher)
  • LO1: Conducting effective search procedures.
  • LO2: Ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals.
  • LO3: Understanding terrorism threats and the role of security personnel in emergencies.
Assessment:
  • Multiple-choice test – 28 questions (45 minutes).
  • Practical assessment – Demonstrating search techniques.
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Requirement
From 1 October 2024, first aid training must include:
  • Managing life-threatening bleeding.
  • Clearing and maintaining open airways.

This requirement aligns with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards.
